Avocado smoothies are so creamy, I'm always on the lookout for new ways to enhance them. This avocado and kiwi smoothie benefits from the addition of chia seeds for a nutritional boost and is made just a bit tangy with just a splash of lime juice.
Winter is a grim business in Scotland, and I sometimes need something to boost my spirits not only through taste but also visually. This avocado smoothie reminds me of summer and I often make it just to take my mind off the endless storms and rain that batter my kitchen window.
I am, as you may have gathered, not living in a place blessed with the finest avocados in the world, so I have to make do with why I can find in Scottish supermarkets.
Sometimes I need to hunt them down, as the best ones are difficult to come by every day, but when I manage to find some that are ripe enough to use on the day I purchase them, I always make this beautiful green smoothie.
What are the benefits of avocados in a smoothie?
Besides enriching your smoothie with health benefits such as antioxidants, fiber, and a plethora of vitamins including Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B5 and B6, avocadoes are also one of the best ways to make a vegan smoothy.
That's because they are creamy enough to make a silky smoothie on their own, so you don't have to bother with using yoghurt or milk.
Moreover, avocado doesn't have too strong a flavour, so it won't be able to overpower the other ingredients you decide to use in your smoothie.
What do you need to make this avocado and kiwi smoothie?
To make the smoothie, you will need the following:
- 1 medium-sized ripe avocado
- 2 small kiwi fruits, as ripe as you can find them
- The juice of half a lime
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
You can add a handful of baby spinach leaves to the mix if you want an extra boost, and I have also tried it with grapefruit juice instead of lime. That would work for those looking for a bolder, slightly bitter mix.
