I love tartar sauce with all kinds of seafood, from fish and chips to crispy shrimp and fish sticks.
However, regular tartar sauce is loaded with fat and calories, so it’s certainly not something I can enjoy guilt-free.
The good news is that it’s super easy to make homemade healthy tartar sauce without mayo.
This low-cal tartar sauce recipe has all the goodness of regular tartar sauce without the calories. That’s because it’s made with low-fat Greek yogurt instead!
Greek yogurt tartar sauce is actually good for you because of the protein in yogurt.
It’s my go-to low-calorie sauce for fish, and lately, we’ve been enjoying it with these air fryer fish sticks.
Why you’ll love this healthy tartar sauce
- It only takes 5 minutes to make — simply chop some capers, dill pickles and shallot, mix it all together and voila!
- You can make it with low-fat or 0% Greek yogurt.
- It keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days so it’s a great make-ahead dip.
What goes into low fat tartar sauce
Low-fat Greek yogurt — I tried multiple types of Greek yogurt for this tartar sauce, and I stopped at Fage Total 2%. This yogurt has the perfect consistency for tartar sauce. I also had good results with Fage Total 0%.
If you’re not too bothered about the fat content, you can also make the tartar sauce with full-fat Greek yogurt — the result will obviously be a creamier sauce.
Capers — There’s no need to rinse the capers before using them in the sauce but make sure you drain them.
Dill pickles (gherkins) — Feel free to adjust the quantity of dill pickles. I like lots of it in my tartar sauce, but not everyone’s a fan.
Shallot — If you don’t have shallots, a small red onion would also work here.
Lemon juice — Freshly squeezed lemon juice is always best in the kind of sauce.
How to make tartar sauce without mayo
Add the low-fat Greek yogurt to a bowl together with the chopped capers, gherkins, shallot, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
Mix well to combine and adjust seasoning to taste.
Serve immediately, or place the tartar sauce in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
Recipe notes and tips
- This low-fat tartar sauce will keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. You may need to give it a stir before serving, especially if using 0% fat yogurt.
- Add some freshly chopped chives or dill for extra flavor.
- A pinch of cayenne pepper adds a bit of a kick if you’re into that.

Wonderful recipe. I love tartar sauce, not only with fish, but on burgers and on fries.
For the first time, I can eat all I want and not worry about fat and calories.
I did substitute sweet pickle relish (since that is what I had) and it was great. Have received loads of compliments.

This is SO delicious! I was looking for a high protein tartar sauce and actually never thought of simply chopping my favorite pickles instead of relish. The capers are a huge hit. And shallots uplevel every meal. Great recipe- Thank you!
